Mediation
How Does Mediation Work?

Making Contact.
When a landlord or a tenant requests mediation, the mediation coordinator will contact the other party and invite them to participate in mediation.

Contact the other party.
If both parties agree, then the coordinator will set a time and place that is convenient for both parties and will get a volunteer mediator to meet with the parties.

Conduct the mediation.
At the mediation session, the parties explain the dispute to the mediator and the mediator gets the parties to find a solution that works for both of them.

Make an agreement.
At the mediation meeting, the parties will make an agreement. Each party will leave the mediation meeting with a signed agreement.

Monitor the agreement.
At some time after the agreement is made, the coordinator will check with both parties to see if the agreement has been fulfilled.

If the parties cannot reach an agreement, either may pursue legal remedies. Nothing said in mediation will affect your legal alternatives.
